Hi all, this is my first post to the forum,
I used to post over at rsf with Matt.

This is a question to anyone who might have experience training judo in Japan,
I am going over to Hokkaido for about a month and will be mostly living between Sapporo and Otaru.
I have wanted to train JMA for a while, since I love the efficiency of judo and also have lots of respect for the pure toughness of styles like Kyokushin.
I think I will do judo though, because my plate is already pretty full in terms of striking art stuff, and I really need to work on my throwing and neiwaza game.
Has anyone ever trained judo in japan?
what are your insights?
what is the nature of schools there?
how should I find one and what should I be looking for?
anyone know anybody in Hokkaido who is doing this?
how do they do in terms of injury rates?
I have heard that at one point it had become fashionable for some teachers to try to hurt gaikokujin, does that still hold true?

Any and all information is welcome and I thank you for it!!

Best

Rob

I did Judo at the kodokan and kyokushin in Japan.
This was years ago and english wasn't a problem, but then again I was only over there for 3 weeks so...

Some info for you:

Kyokushin is more tricky because it depends which IKO you are part of.
In 1953, Mas Oyama opened his first "Dojo", a grass lot in Mejiro in Tokyo. In 1956, the first real Dojo was opened in a former ballet studio behind Rikkyo University, 500 meters from the location of the current Japanese honbu dojo (headquarters) in Tokyo.
