Bagua Circling and the Drop Step

Post  Conn Cummins on Wed Dec 14, 2011 8:12 am

Took me about two years for this to become natural, but I have a nice and quite deceptive piece of footwork some of you guys may be interested in or maybe you do it already.

Anyway here it is. It combines bagua's circle walking and slight change of angle relative to the opponant, with what I call the drop step, which is essentially placing the weight over one leg and then lifting that leg and falling forward and extending through the back leg to create the power for the strike, entry, smother etc

the inside leg of the "circle" (i don't really try to walk a full circle BTW) is the one I place the weight on before launching forward and the outside leg provides the initiation for the change of direction from "circling" to straight forward.

It's a neat move. Anyone tried this in sparring?

if I understand you correctly,
it sounds like xinyiliuhe's stepping method.

Hey Rob,

yeah I've seen it in a number of arts. I picked it up from Hsing Yi but it has become a big part of my bagua training. Here is a brief clip I did in my lunch hour yesterday.
